Ruling parties mark Constitution Day

September 1st, 2021

The ruling parties on Wednesday marked Slovakia's national holiday, Constitution Day. Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) parliamentary group leader Anna Zemanova said that while the Constitution is "not unalterable dogma, it is a document of cardinal gravity." Breaches of the constitution are at the root of many problems in Slovakia, she said. The We Are Family party said the constitution was "the basic and superior law of the state, which is why it's important for us to pay attention [to it]." Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OLaNO) said Constitution Day afforded an opportunity to reflect on one's relationship to the basic law. "Since its founding, our party has done its utmost to ensure that the Constitution and laws are in effect not only on paper, but really guarantee justice to all Slovak citizens," a party spokesman said. A statement from the For the People party said "the importance of the Constitution can be appreciated only when we don't perceive it as just a law, but as a set of principles guiding the conduct of the entire society."
