The Prague zoo is the first in the world to keep the Pel's fishing owl, a species from the owl family living in Africa and feeding on fish, two pairs of which it bought from an Italian private breeding centre in July, the zoo representatives have told CTK. One of the largest owl species, the Pel's fishing owl is 60 centimetres tall, weighs over two kilograms and has a wingspan of 1.5 metres. The last zoo to previously keep these owls was the Pretoria zoo, which had some in 2003, and in Europe it was the Paris zoo, which kept one specimen until 1999, the Prague zoo officials said.
