Polish tribunal to examine EU treaty on violence against women - PM

July 30th, 2020

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Thursday he will ask the Constitutional Tribunal to examine whether the Istanbul Convention on combatting domestic violence is in line with the Polish constitution. Morawiecki said doubts had been raised about the Convention, adding that it may violate Poland's legal order. He said it incorrectly defined the real causes of violence against women while failing to provide effective tools in the fight against domestic violence. "These are very serious doubts ... that cannot be passed over."
