The zoo in Wroclaw, in south-western Poland, is the first in the world to successfully breed Palawan hornbills, one of the least known bird species, and one of the most endangered. According to a zoo spokesperson, it is believed that Palawan hornbills are unlikely to survive over the next ten years in their natural environment. "That is why a breeding programme was launched in zoological gardens seven years ago," Joanna Kij said.
