The Gdynia Maritime Office on Friday signed an agreement with the Polish-Belgian consortium of NDI and Besix companies for the construction of a canal cutting through the Vistula Spit to provide the Vistula Lagoon with independent access to the Baltic Sea. Today, Polish ships sailing into and out of the Vistula Lagoon need to use the Russia-administered Strait of Baltiysk. The construction, which the Polish government treats as a strategic investment that increases the country's navigation independence, will cost PLN 992 mln (EUR 228 mln).
