Poland has offered nearly 800 scholarships to Belarusians under a programme to help those being persecuted. The Belarusian authorities have cracked down hard on opponents of the regime of Alexander Lukashenko, the country's president, since he won disputed presidential elections in August. Thousands have been arrested in a wave of persecution that has drawn condemnation from around the world. All the scholarships will be for victims of repression.
