Orthodox Christians in Slovakia celebrate Christmas eve

January 6th, 2020

Orthodox Christians (predominantly in the east of the country) and also Greek Catholics in certain villages in eastern Slovakia observing the Julian calendar are celebrating Christmas Eve on Monday, with a Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great on this day sung not after the Great Vespers, but in the morning, being the Lord's Day. The services proceed in the evening with Great Vespers and Great Compline, called 'Velikoe Povecheriye' in Church Slavonic.
