Metnar: Czech troops won't return to Afghanistan anytime soon

September 3rd, 2021

It seems that Czech soldiers will not return to Afghanistan anytime soon, Defence Minister Lubomir Metnar told journalists at an event at National Memorial Vitkov that symbolically ended the Afghan mission on Friday. Metnar said it was hard to predict the developments in Afghanistan. "It will depend on the Taliban how it will respect human rights, how it will get rid of violence and keep its promises," he said, adding that the European Union and NATO must press on the Taliban to keep its promises. He said the mission met its main goal, which was the elimination of international terrorism. "I would not like the last days to completely shroud the 20-year operation, though there were a number of problems," Metnar said.
