Justice minister vows to defend Hungary at Article 7 hearing

September 16th, 2019

Justice Minister Judit Varga, arriving at an EU ministerial hearing about the ongoing Article 7 procedure against Hungary in Brussels on Monday, said: "We came to defend Hungary." Speaking to reporters ahead of the meeting of the General Affairs Council, Varga expressed hope that member states would "refrain from applying double standards" when scrutinising Hungary and that the procedure would not be political in nature. "I hope it'll be a fair and evidence-based meeting," she added. Last September, the European Parliament approved a report prepared by Dutch Green MEP Judith Sargentini triggering an Article 7 procedure against Hungary which could ultimately strip the country of its EU voting rights. MEPs voted to launch the procedure because of the "existence of a clear risk of a serious breach by Hungary of the values on which the Union is founded".
