Former Prague imam sent to prison for joining terrorist group

February 28th, 2020

A Prague court on Friday sentenced former Prague imam Samer Shehadeh to 10 years in prison for participation in a terrorist group and financing terrorism, his brother Omar to 11 years in prison and his sister-in-law Fatima Hudkova to six years in prison. The verdict has not taken effect yet, both the suspects and the prosecution may appeal against it. Omar Shehadeh and Hudkova are prosecuted as fugitives. According to the prosecution, Samer Shehadeh helped his brother Omar go from the Czech Republic to Syria in November 2016 and join the fights on the side of the terrorist organisation Jabhat Fatah al-Sham (Front for the Conquest of Syria), a local sister organisation of Al-Qaeda.
