September 23rd, 2021
The European Commission has decided to turn to the European Court of Justice (CJEU) over its dispute with Poland concerning the national telecoms regulator. The EC has accused the government of "undermining the independence of the national telecoms regulator". The EC noted that in May, 2020, the Polish government changed the provisions of its telecommunications law concerning the appointment and dismissal of the president of the national regulatory authority (NRA), the Office of Electronic Communications (UKE). On the basis of the fast-tracked new rules, the UKE's then president, Marcin Cichy, whose term of office was to expire in September 2021, was dismissed.
