EC sues Czech Republic for restricting EU citizens' electoral rights

June 9th, 2021

The European Commission (EC) has sued the Czech Republic and Poland at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) for preventing foreigners from the EU from joining political parties and thus limiting their right to run in local and European elections, the commission's website says. The EC argues that the states restrain the EU citizens' right to stand in elections as the Czech and Polish citizens are entitled to do. According to Brussels, the Czech Republic and Poland are the only EU member states that ban citizens of other EU countries from joining a political party by their legal regulations.
