EC request Poland to "urgently" prove Turow mine has been shut down

October 26th, 2021

The European Commission (EC) has written to Poland requesting urgent evidence that the Turow open-cast lignite mine near the Czech border has been shut down in line with an order by the European Court of Justice (CJEU), an EC spokesman said on Tuesday. The ruling, passed in May, followed Czech complaints that the mine was draining local ground waters. It evoked strong protests from Poland, which refused to shut down the mine arguing that the move would liquidate thousands of jobs and leave countless households without power.
