EC asks Poland to address concerns over its judicial disciplinary body

November 2nd, 2020

The European Commission's justice commissioner has asked Poland's Europe minister to explain a decision by the Polish Supreme Court's disciplinary chamber to strip some judges of their immunity. "Today, I sent a letter to the (Polish) Minister of EU Affairs to request clarification on another concern regarding the situation of the Disciplinary Chamber, more precisely on cases against judges for the waiving of immunity in the context of possible criminal investigations," Didier Reynders wrote on Twitter on Sunday. On October 12, the disciplinary chamber revoked the immunity of a judge, Beata Morawiec, against whom prosecutors want to bring corruption charges.
