Czechs excessively overuse antibiotics

September 30th, 2021

The consumption of antibiotics rose by over one-fifths in Czechia in the past 30 years, while up to one-half of them are administered wrongly, Helena Zemlickova, the head of the National Reference Laboratory for Antiobiotics at the National Health Institute, told CTK today. Most of the antibiotics are prescribed by doctors in outpatients' departments. The overuse of antibiotics contributes to the bacteria ceasing to react to their effect, becoming resistant, Zemlickova said.
