Czech top court rejects motion to lift state of emergency

March 25th, 2021

The Czech Constitutional Court (US) has rejected a motion by senators to override the government's decision to declare a state of emergency over the coronavirus pandemic in February, but implied that the lower house cannot be circumvented if it disagreed with the extension. The Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Czech parliament, refused to support the request of the minority government of ANO and the Social Democrats (CSSD) to prolong the state of emergency. Thus, the state of emergency expired, but a new one followed immediately, which the cabinet declared upon the request of regional governors in February. It lasted 14 days.
