Czech state ordered to apologise for Zeman's comments on late Peroutka

July 2nd, 2020

The Czech state has to apologise, through the Finance Ministry, to late journalist Ferdinand Peroutka's granddaughter Terezie Kaslova for President Milos Zeman's comments on him, the Prague Municipal Court decided in the definitive verdict on Thursday, partly complying with her appeal. Kaslova said she will file a petition for an appellate review with the Supreme Court (NS) as she seeks Zeman's apology for all of his comments about her grandfather. Zeman made the disputed comments at a conference on the Holocaust end anniversary in January 2015. He said, among others, that Peroutka (1895-1978) wrote an article headlined "Hitler is Gentleman". Zeman later asserted that he had seen this article in Peroutka's Pritomnost magazine with his own eyes. Nevertheless, Zeman's aides failed to find such a text in archives, while historians say no such text has ever existed.
