Czech soldier fighting for Ukrainian rebels convicted

May 18th, 2019

A court meted out a three-year sentence suspended for four years and demotion today for Czech career soldier Erik Estu who fought alongside pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine. The demotion actually means that his military career is over. The verdict has not yet taken effect as both sides may still appeal it. According to the indictment, Estu left for Ukraine in 2015 and fought along with pro-Russian separatists there. Estu dismissed the accusations, arguing that he had exaggerated his conduct.
