Czech artist, illustrator Jiri Salamoun dies aged 86 years

Czech artist, illustrator and university lecturer Jiri Salamoun, who won fame as the author of the Maxipes Fik popular cartoon series about a giant dog for children, died on Thursday at the age of 86 years, the Blesk tabloid reported today, referring to his partner. His drawings, whose typical features are playfulness, concise expression and sarcasm, appeared in many books by famous authors, such as The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens, Tracy's Tiger by William Saroyan and The Hobbit, or There and Back Again by J. R. R. Tolkien.
