Chmelar hands symbolic cheque to US Steel and urges it to leave Slovakia

Leader of the fledgling leftist socialisti.sk party Eduard Chmelar on Friday handed over a symbolic cheque marked with one billion euros at the gatehouse of the U.S. Steel Kosice plant to symbolise the investment debt that he thinks the company management should pay its employees, calling on the American owner to leave Kosice. U.S. Steel announced the lay-offs of 2,500 people by the end of 2021 in July due to the adverse situation on the steel market, blaming rising imports of steel from countries that aren't required to observe existing EU rules and aren't part of the European emissions quota system.
