Child poverty rate shows major fall in Hungary

March 9th, 2020

Hungary has reported the third fastest drop in the child poverty rate in the European Union since 2010, the deputy leader of the Christian Democrats said on Monday, citing a recent Eurostat survey. In 2010, Hungary ranked 25th in terms of child poverty and social exclusion among the bloc's 28 member states, Bence Retvari of the junior ruling party told MTI. Fresh Eurostat data show that the country has since moved up seven places on the list, he said. Latvia and Poland have also seen major improvements on this score, he added. Retvari said the data showed that the Hungarian government's policy focused on family support, job creation and tax cuts had yielded strong results.
