Cashless payment overtakes cash in Poland - paper

October 8th, 2020

In the second quarter of 2020, Poles used non-cash payments more frequently than cash for the first time in the history of collecting data on Poles' payments, the daily Rzeczpospolita said on Thursday. The paper reported that in the second quarter, Poles made only 112 million zlotys (EUR 24.9m) in withdrawals from ATMs, the least since the fourth quarter of 2004, when the National Bank of Poland started to collect such data. According to the paper, as the number and value of ATM withdrawals declined, the number of these devices decreased. "In the first six months of this year alone, 560 devices disappeared, whereas at the end of June there were 22,100 ATMs," the paper said.
