Late ex-president of Slovakia Michal Kovac will always be remembered as a statesman deserving of respect and recognition, President Zuzana Caputova said on Tuesday on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of Kovac's death. "His view of his mandate was that he was meant to be the president of all Slovaks. He promised that he wouldn't betray either Slovakia or his reason and conscience," Caputova said. "He didn't back down even when pressured by brutal means. These are some of the reasons why we'll remember him as a statesman who deserves respect and recognition." Caputova paid homage to Kovac in Ondrejsky cemetery in Bratislava, lighting a candle and laying flowers on his grave.
