February 25th, 2021
President Janos Ader and First Lady Anita Herczegh lit candles in front of the House of Terror Museum in Budapest, marking the memorial day of the victims of communist dictatorships. The House of Terror Museum on central Andrassy Avenue was the headquarters of the communist regime's secret police between 1948 and 1956, and a symbol of oppression and terror in communist times. It now houses a museum commemorating the victims of Nazism and Communism. Hungary's parliament declared February 25 a memorial day of the victims of communist dictatorships in 2000, to commemorate Bela Kovacs, head of the Independent Smallholders' Party, who was arrested on that day in 1947 and later deported to the Soviet Union.
