Polish President opens UN open debate

May 17th, 2018

Polish President Andrzej Duda opened a debate at the UN headquarters in New York on Thursday. The debate, which focuses on the role of international law in maintaining international peace and security, will be led by the Polish head of state and has been prepared by Poland in connection with the country taking over the presidency of the UN Security Council on May 1. President Duda is scheduled to deliver a speech. Presidential aide Krzysztof Szczerski stated that the subject of the debate, proposed by the Polish president, will be "Peace through law." As he explained, this refers to the "significance of international law as a guarantor of peace and relations between states, based on norms which are the basis of peaceful relations between states in the contemporary world, and the foundation of the UN."
