Czech activists submit petition to parlt against export of livestock to non-EU states

June 14th, 2018

Activists have submitted to parliament a petition against the export of livestock to non-EU countries due to cruelty to animals during their transport and their slaughtering, Romana Sonkova of the Compassion in World Farming NGO's Czech branch told reporters on Thursday. The petition was signed by 24,167 citizens. Last year, the Czech Republic exported 72,000 live farm animals, mainly cattle, to Turkey and another 1,000 pieces were sent to Libya and Lebanon. The petition points out that animals suffer during long transport because of confined space and a lack of fodder and water. In addition, they are often slaughtered fully conscious without being paralysed beforehand in non-EU countries.
