The construction of a waterway linking the Vistula Lagoon with the Baltic Sea will boost tourism and serve the local community as well as the state's interests, according to Jakub Farinade, the Sztutowo commune head. The Vistula Lagoon currently has no access to the Baltic Sea from Polish territory and ships sailing out of the lagoon need to use Russia's Strait of Baltiysk. On October 19, Maritime Economy Minister Marek Grobarczyk announced that the locality of Nowy Swiat near the Polish-Russian border had been selected as the best location for the canal.
