State citizenship act has deprived 2,754 people of Slovak passport

February 25th, 2019

A total of 2,754 people have lost their Slovak passports to date (between July 17, 2010-February 21, 2019) under the State Citizenship Act, according to statistics released by the Interior Ministry. Slovaks most often lost their Slovak citizenship by acquiring that of the Czech Republic (644 people). The State Citizenship Act was adopted by the first government of Robert Fico (2006-10) in response to Hungarian legislation that made it possible for ethnic Hungarians living outside Hungary to gain dual citizenship.
