If the law on financing churches is to be amended, it should not involve only cosmetic changes, but a fundamental separation of church and state, the opposition Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party said on Tuesday. "Therefore, if the current wording of the legislative amendment drafted by the Culture Ministry makes it to parliament, we won't support it," MP Renata Kascakova said. SaS believes that a concept needs to be implemented under which the state's role would be reduced to co-financing religious monuments, with churches covering much more of their financing via their own activities, including fundraising.
