Ruling parties welcome Kovacik's detention

October 22nd, 2020

The detention of Special Prosecutor Dusan Kovacik is a key moment in the fight for a just Slovakia, Parliamentary Vice-chair Juraj Seliga told a news conference on Thursday, adding that Kovacik should immediately resign from his post. "This man has swept 63 cases under the rug," Seliga said, adding that Kovacik had filed only a single lawsuit during the whole of his term in office. He mentioned several cases from the past that Kovacik had failed to tackle, such as Gorilla and the financing of Smer-SD, and so he views his detention as good news. Seliga noted that Kovacik has the right to the presumption of innocence and a fair trial. Parliamentary defence committee head Juraj Krupa (OLaNO) said that things had "finally started to move" and that people in senior posts could not be certain of keeping them if they had broken the law.
