Polish opposition on spending spree to outbid ruling party's handouts

July 12th, 2019

The Polish opposition grouping Civic Coalition (KO) on Friday presented a 30 billion zloty (EUR 7bn) parliamentary election programme which includes lower tax rates and insurance premiums, as well as bonuses for low-earners and incentives for young entrepreneurs. The "Lower taxes, higher pay" programme was presented by Andrzej Rzonca, the chief economist for the Civic Platform (PO) party, the coalition leader. KO's programme can be seen as an attempt to outbid the ruling party Law and Justice (PiS), which has introduced a number of socially-oriented schemes that have bolstered support for the party in opinion polls.
