Poland's population to shrink by 2.8 m in 25 years - stats office

August 10th, 2018

Poland's population is expected to decline by 2.8 million in the next 25 years, and the country has entered a demographic crisis which may transform into a long-term tendency, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) said in the latest report on demographic trends. "The results of the forecast show that during the next 25 years, Poland's population will decline by 2.8 million," GUS said, noting that over the past 25 years, it has increased by over 360,000. Mortality will have the greatest impact on this state of affairs, GUS wrote. For example, in 2040 the number of deaths will reach 440,000, thus the demographic boom of the second half of the 1950s, that is the current 60-year-olds, will start dying.
