MEPs Laima Andrikiene from Lithuania and Eduard Kukan from Slovakia made a joint statement late Thursday to express regret over the unjust trial of Dmitry Konovalov and Vladislav Kovalev and urged Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko to impose a moratorium on their death sentence. They said the guilt of the two had never been proven. Konovalov and Kovalev were sentenced to death over charges of committing a terrorist attack in a Minsk subway last April, killing 15 people and wounding 200.
