FinMin: Negative demographic trends pose a risk to Poland's growth

June 14th, 2018

Negative demographic trends constitute a threat to Poland's dynamic economic growth and the country's sustainable convergence with the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), the Polish Finance Ministry said in an EMU convergence report. "Over a longer time horizon, negative democratic trends pose a potential risk to the dynamic growth of the Polish economy and the process of sustainable convergence with the EMU," the ministry wrote. The total fertility rate, which amounted to 1.39 in 2016, does not ensure an adequate replacement rate and is one of the lowest in Europe, the ministry said, adding that among EU member states only Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Malta and Cyprus recorded slightly worse figures.
