The European Commission (EC) on Thursday warned Poland over the lack of implementation of a ruling issued by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) on reduction of excessive air pollution. The EC said it could demand financial penalties from Warsaw. Poland has two months to respond to the EC's letter. In February 2018, the CJEU ruled that Poland had breached the EU law by allowing for excessive, long-lasting concentration of the PM10 particulate matter in the air which is very harmful to humans and can cause a range of health problems, including premature deaths. The EC sued Warsaw over the matter in 2016, quoting Poland's breach of the EU air quality directive. The latest EC procedure against Warsaw may end in referring Poland to the CJEU again.
