The European Commission has brought a case against Poland before the Court of Justice of the European Union over the country's new disciplinary system for judges. "The European Commission refers Poland to the Court of Justice (CJEU) to protect judges from political control," the EC said in a statement. The EC wants the case to be put on a fast track. "In view of the potential impact of the disciplinary regime on judicial independence, a request for an expedited procedure is warranted, to obtain a final judgment as soon as possible," the EC said. According to PAP's sources in the EU, European Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans, who is responsible for the rule of law at the EC, had advocated for filing the case with the CJEU.
