The European Commission has brought Poland before the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU) in connection with Poland's law on the Supreme Court (SN) in a fast-tracked procedure. It has asked the court to suspend some regulations of the Supreme Court law. EC spokeswoman Mina Andreeva said on Monday that the EC wants the judges affected by the new law to continue to exercise their judicial functions even if they have retired. It also wants Poland to suspend the appointment of new judges, who are to replace the judges who have retired "too early." According to the EC, the implementation of the questioned regulations governing the retirement of Supreme Court judges has been accelerated and has created a threat to the independence of the judicial system in Poland, as well as to the EU legal system.
