Czech Defence Minister Lubomir Metnar will sign the contract on the purchase of US helicopters for 14.6 billion crowns (EUR 571m) in the United States on Thursday, after his meeting with US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper, Defence Ministry spokesman Jan Pejsek has told CTK. Metnar will leave for the US on Tuesday morning, Pejsek added. Czech soldiers will get eight 12 UH-1Y Venom utility helicopters and four AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters as of 2023. The US helicopters will replace the Russian combat Mi-24s whose lifespan will soon expire and they cannot be fully used in NATO. The Defence Ministry will purchase the 12 helicopters from the Bell firm in the form of an intergovernmental agreement.
