Czech athletes have been more successful than their Slovak colleagues in the 25 years following the split of Czechoslovakia in 1993, having won more medals at world and European championships in most individual and team sports. However, this partly reflects the fact that the Czech Republic has two times the number of inhabitants of Slovakia, which has a population of 5.4 million. The Czech Republic has won 80 Olympic medals since 1993, compared to the 33 won by Slovak athletes.
