The Christian Democratic Party (KDNP) hopes that the European People's Party's next leadership will focus more on crucial European issues and less on internal disputes, KDNP lawmaker Lorinc Nacsa said in Zagreb on Wednesday. Speaking to MTI on the first day of the EPP's leadership election congress, Nacsa said his party was "cautiously optimistic" about the centre-right grouping's new leaders. He noted that the EPP leadership contest would merely be a technicality given that former Polish prime minister Donald Tusk is the sole candidate running to replace France's Joseph Daul, who had led the grouping since 2013.
