Hungary's Orban holds talks with Finnish deputy PM in Budapest Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Thursday held talks with Finnish Deputy Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen, and the two officials discussed the state of bilateral strategic economic cooperation and its further development, Orban's press office said in a statement. "The arrival of thousands of Hungarian refugees helped to shape Canada's model for the reception of refugees and helped Canadians adopt a more receptive attitude towards immigrants," the embassy statement quoted Environment Minister Jim Prentice as saying, who made the announcement. 29/07/2010 Gov't defines goals for Hungary EU presidency Hungary's government has defined the policy objectives for the country's upcoming European Union presidency, state secretary designate in charge of EU affairs Eniko Gyori said on Thursday. Gyori spoke at a round-table conference in the Foreign Ministry, and said that a government session on Wednesday listed topics including revitalisation of the European economy, mitigating the effects of the crisis, increasing stability and fiscal discipline, as well as promoting structural reforms and the EU's strategy to boost growth and competitiveness. 29/07/2010 Hungary farm minister meets Polish counterpart Hungarian Minister of Agriculture Sandor Fazekas met Poland's Marek Sawicki for talks on issues around the European Union's Common Agricultural Policy as well as problems of producers in both countries, in Warsaw on Thursday. Hungary and Poland share the same position concerning the reform of CAP, Sawicki told reporters following the talks. He added that the two countries were committed to a close cooperation in 2011, when Hungary, then Poland will be presidents of the EU. 29/07/2010 Hungary parl' speaker meets Formula 1 racers, captains Parliamentary Speaker and incoming President Pal Schmitt met drivers and captains of the teams competing in this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, in Parliament on Thursday. In his address, Schmitt thanked Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone for "making up his mind 30 years ago to bring the racing spectacle over the Iron Curtain." The former premier cast doubt on Finance Minister Ivan Miklos's plans to cut back public finances deficit by 1.7 billion euros or 2.5 percent of GDP. "If someone is saying he will save 2 billion euros, which is a hefty sum, he should reveal clear tools by which to achieve this. Dzurinda also said that he had extended an invitation to Westerwelle to attend a meeting between Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia as guest when the Visegrad Four group marks its 20th anniversary later this year. 29/07/2010 Poland's, Germany's ministers discuss joint transport policy Poland's and Germany's Infrastructure Ministers - Cezary Grabarczyk and Peter Ramsauer - on Thursday discussed the future of joint transport policy and current problems in railway and road infrastructure. "Rail and water transport is very important in Poland's and Germany's economic relations," Grabarczyk said. "We are carrying out projects in road and rail infrastructure in order to make this transport more efficient." 29/07/2010 Left to seek support for Polish-Russian foundation The Left wants to consult a resolution establishing a Polish-Russian foundation with other parliamentary caucuses before it lodges it with the Sejm, Democratic Left Alliance's spokesman Tomasz Kalita said. The foundation is to develop relations with Russia. The draft resolution is ready to be lodged but the Left wants to consult it with other caucuses first. "We want other caucuses as well as (President) Bronislaw Komorowski and (main opposition party leader) Jaroslaw Kaczynski to support the draft," Kalita said. 29/07/2010 Polish airports handle 9.1 million passengers in H1 Poland's airports handled 9,101,300 passengers in the first half of 2010, up 5.4 percent year-on-year, the Civil Aviation Office (ULC) reported on Thursday. In 2009 Poland's airports handled 18,945,857 passengers, down 8.25 percent from 2008. Warsaw's Okecie remained Poland's most popular airport with the number of passengers up 2.9 percent year-on-year. Regional airports handled 5,197,000 passengers in the first half of 2010, up 7.3 percent year-on-year, ULC reported. 29/07/2010 Polish, Hungarian agriculture ministers on CAP The future of the common agricultural policy (CAP) and current farming problems were discussed in Warsaw on Thursday by Polish Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki and his Hungarian counterpart Sandor Fazekas. Poland and Hungary want to jointly work for such reform of the EU agricultural policy which would make it just and satisfying for the two countries as well as entire Europe. For years Poland and Hungary have been presenting common position on CAP in the Visegrad Group, Sawicki told reporters after a meeting. 29/07/2010 New terminal to be built in Gdansk port A new ore and coal transshipment terminal will be built in the Baltic Gdansk Port within two years. Belgian SEA-invest group will invest some 50 million euros in the terminal. The new terminal is to give easy access to ores and coal to the power and steel industries in Poland and Central Europe. The terminal will have an unloading capacity of some 30,000 tons in 24 hours. 29/07/2010 Prague town hall insists on Mucha's Slav Epic Lawyers of the Prague City Hall are of the view that the town hall of Moravsky Krumlov, south Moravia, was not entitled to ban the removal of the Slav Epic, a cycle by Art Nouveau artist Alfons Mucha, to Prague as it was biased, Prague counsellor Ondrej Pecha told reporters on Thursday. Prague wants to base its case on this and other arguments if it does not make agreement with Moravsky Krumlov, Pecha said. 29/07/2010 Prague does not threaten sights by construction - UNESCO The UNESCO European Heritage Committee said ongoing construction works in Prague are not threatening its historical monuments, Czech Radio reported on Thursday. Czech Radio said Prague was not among the 25 "critical places" and UNESCO experts would not deal with the impact of the Blanka tunnel on the heritage zone or the reconstruction of Charles Bridge. However, they will publish the result of the winter inspection of its officials of Prague. 29/07/2010 Czech minister promises money for Roma Holocaust info centre The Czech state should find money for the construction of a Roma Holocaust Information and Education Centre on the spot of a former internment camp for Roma in Hodonin u Kunstatu, Education Minister Josef Dobes told reporters on Thursday. "It may be good to send a moral signal during a crisis," he said. The previous Czech government earmarked 90 million crowns for the centre. The Education Ministry bought the area of the former camp last year. (USD 1= CZK 19.233) 29/07/2010 Czech minister pledges to save 1.5 of required 3bn at most Czech Education Minister Josef Dobes on Thursday said he would not lower teachers´ pay and therefore his ministry will save maximally 1.5 billion crowns by end-2010, a mere half of what it is supposed to save according to an austerity plan the government approved on Wednesday. All ministries are to freeze 10.2 billion crowns altogether from their 2010 budgets. Tuma, who will run for TOP 09 in the autumn local elections as election leader in Prague, said he would join the party before the elections. 29/07/2010 Hundreds of Czech families to get welfare benefits from Slovakia Hundreds of families living in the Czech Republic will finally receive welfare payments from Slovakia if they have the right to them, Labour and Social Affairs Ministry spokeswoman Viktorie Plivova said on Wednesday. Among the recipients will be the elderly who receive Slovak pensions and families with disabled children whose parents work in Slovakia and who so far did not receive a benefit for care from Slovak authorities, she said. 28/07/2010 Klaus for Mucha´s Slav Epic to remain on display in Moravia Czech President Vaclav Klaus supports the efforts to keep the Slav Epic, a monumental cycle by Art Nouveau painter Alfons Mucha, on display in Moravsky Krumlov, south Moravia, he said to the town Mayor Jaroslav Mokry on Wednesday. The cycle of 20 paintings depicts scenes from the history of Slavs. 28/07/2010 Czech cabinet approves 10-billion expenditure freeze The Czech cabinet on Wednesday approved the freezing of expenditures of individual ministries worth 10.2 billion crowns, Prime Minister Petr Necas said after a cabinet meeting. Another roughly 1.8 billion will refer to the chapters State Debt and the General Cash Administration, Necas said. According to the report, only seven out of the 36 signatory countries actively enforce the commitments ensuing from the convention of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development). 28/07/2010 Exhibition presents stories of Czech Jews deported to Belarus The stories of Czech Jews deported to Belarusian ghettoes and extermination camps are presented in an exhibition of the Prague Jewish Museum that will open on July 29, its curator Jana Splichalova said on Wednesday. "Seven trains transported nearly 7000 people to Belarus and only 22 of them survived to see the end of the war," she said. The exhibition presents the three main places where Jews were imprisoned: the Minsk ghetto, Maly Trostinets death camp and Baranovichi railway station. 28/07/2010 Polish opposition leader urges government to help flood victims Democratic Left Alliance's leader Grzegorz Napieralski has urged the government to speed up assistance to flood victims. Napieralski visited Wednesday several localities which had been hit by flooding in May and June and met with farmers who suffered losses in the flood. Napieralski criticized the government for too slow payout of benefits to flood victims. "This is a big task for the government to help people since it was one of the biggest floods in history," he added. 28/07/2010 Governing party PO edges down to 43 percent support, opposition PiS down to 29 percent Poland's governing party Civic Platform (PO) saw its voter support decline by 1 percentage point to 43 percent at end-July, while support for the major opposition party PiS slid by 2 points to 29 percent, a poll by PBS DGA researcher showed. Left-wing opposition SLD saw an increase in support to 11 percent. Junior coalition partner PSL stayed flat at 2 percent, far below the 5 percentthreshold required to enter parliament. The survey was conducted on a representative sample of 1068 adult Poles. 28/07/2010 Seven Polish soldiers wounded in Afghanistan Seven Polish soldiers were wounded on Tuesday when their Rosomak armoured vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb in the southern part of the Ghazni province in Afghanistan, the Operational Command of the Armed Forces reported. All the wounded soldiers have been hospitalized. At present Poland has 2,600 troops in Afghanistan. A few days ago Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski confirmed that Poland wanted to withdraw its forces from Afghanistan by the end of 2012. 28/07/2010 Polish, Irish agriculture ministers on CAP after 2013 The shape of the common agricultural policy (CAP) after 2013 was discussed Wednesday by Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki and Irish Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Brendan Smith. "We discussed the future shape of the EU agricultural policy. Both Poland and Ireland want to be well prepared for a final discussion on the subject, to be held probably during Poland's EU presidency in the second half of 2011, Sawicki told reporters after the meeting. 28/07/2010 Polish PM receives Vasek-Polak award Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk paid a visit to Prague on Wednesday where he received the annual Vasek and Anna Maria Polak award. The ceremony was held at the Charles University in Prague. Slota offered to resign his after the general election on June 12 in which his party only narrowly made it back into parliament. Four years earlier it enjoyed 12 percent in the polls. 28/07/2010 Cbank to Join Eurozone survey of households Slovakia's central bank (NBS) said on Wednesday that it would join a joint Household Finance and Consumption Survey (HFCS) organised by certain central banks in the eurozone in order to help provide the European Central Bank (ECB) and themselves with data comparable with that in other eurozone countries. 28/07/2010 Government approves programme The cabinet led by Prime Minister Iveta Radicova at a session on Wednesday approved the government's programme. The document is now awaiting approval from Parliament in early August. During his trip to Berlin on Thursday, Dzurinda is scheduled to meet his German counterpart Guido Westerwelle. 28/07/2010 Hungary jobless rate drops second time in one year Hungary's average unemployment rate was 11.1 percent in the 15-74 age group in April-June, down from 11.4 percent in March-May although still up from 9.6 percent a year earlier, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said on Wednesday. The moving-average rate dropped for the second time after its first decrease in one year in March-May. 28/07/2010 POLL - Hungary's govt alliance maintains overwhelming support PM Viktor Orban and centre-right Fidesz-led government maintained overwhelming support in July, according to a poll by Nezopont Institute. Fully 64 percent of respondents rated Orban positively while 54 percent were satisfied with the government's performance. This is a significant increase to last month when only 46 percent were satisfied with the government. Support for the Fidesz-KDNP has remained high, with 62 percent of active voters saying they would vote for the party alliance. 28/07/2010 Hungary not tackling corruption, says TI Corruption watchdog Transparency International (TI) said on Wednesday that Hungary was barely doing anything to tackle corrupt practices such as Hungarian investors bribing foreign officials or deterring foreign investors from graft. In a statement, TI noted that Hungary had got low marks from the OECD in a recent assessment of the implementation of an agreement which came into force in the country in May 2000 on combatting bribery. 28/07/2010 Szechenyi Plan - SMEs need quick access to resources - minister Hungary's small and medium-sized businesses must have quick access to Hungarian and European Union resources, national development minister Tamas Fellegi said on Wednesday. The government plans to step up the efficient and coordinated support in order to channel 1,000 billion forints into the sector by the end of the current governing cycle, he said. At an event outlining the government's new development plan, Orban said that Hungary's financial situation was stable and predictable, and the government plan to continue structural reforms while igniting growth provided "a good basis for hope". 28/07/2010 Various types of gun to be re-classified in line with new law in Slovakia Paintball weapons, air rifles and tranquilliser guns will be re-classified in the 'D' category as of Wednesday, according to an amendment to the Act on Firearms and Ammunition. Because of this, gun-holders will be required to carry IDs when armed, and keep their weapons concealed in public. Furthermore, they will need to submit to alcohol breath-tests and if they use their weapons in self-defence or outside the designated limits, they are required to notify the police. 27/07/2010 Zitnanska: high salary bonuses for Slovakia's former ministry officials immoral Justice Minister Lucia Zitnanska said at a briefing on Tuesday that high bonuses for some of the former officials working at the Justice Ministry were okayed immorally. A group of the privileged emerged at the ministry over the past years, she said. "We're looking into it, and changes need to be made in this for the future. The new management at the ministry plans to enjoy no such bonuses. Not at all," emphasised Zitnanska. 27/07/2010 Slovak analyst: manifesto represents big intersection of election programmes The Manifesto proposal that the Coalition Council discussed on Monday night represents a "big intersection" of the individual election programmes of the Coalition parties, political analyst Grigorij Meseznikov told TASR on Tuesday. It was impossible to include everything in the Manifesto due to the currently unfavourable state of the economy. "The exhibition should start in the other half of October and last for two and a half months," Trestik told CTK. According to available information, the officer shot herself dead with her service gun at the Prague Police headquarters a fortnight ago. Jezkova said the officer had left a suicide letter on the spot. The daily Pravo said the 29-year-old officer in her suicide letter complained about hazing by her superiors. 27/07/2010 One-third of Czechs satisfied with new govt lineup - poll One-third of Czechs are satisfied with the lineup of the new coalition cabinet of Petr Necas (Civic Democrats, ODS), while one-fifth assess it negatively, according to a poll conducted by the Focus agency and released to CTK. Most of the respondents said they expect the new cabinet to reduce both the state debt and unemployment, prevent the misuse of welfare benefits and combat the economic crisis. Dhanges to the tax system should not weigh on the poor and that the government should ensure guarantees that the new bank tax will not be passed on to customers, he added. 27/07/2010 PM confirms introduction of flat-rate personal income tax in Jan Hungary will shift to a flat-rate personal income tax next January, Prime Minister Viktor Orban told public television on Monday evening, refuting press reports about plans to postpone the introduction of the new taxation system. It is another matter how many years transition will take to implement, he added. Orban said the new system would support families with the lowest tax rate of all times, and would be expected to make Hungary the most competitive economy in Central Europe. 27/07/2010 Public media - improved service, no lay-offs, says Fidesz official The new regulation of Hungary's public-service media seeks to improve output, and large-scale lay-offs are not on the agenda, a top Fidesz media official has said. The measure, which is part of the new government's 29-point "economic action plan", has made homemade brandy-distilling exempt of the excise tax if produced in non-commercial quantities. Under current regulations private individuals can brew their own palinka but under strict controls and not in their own homes. 26/07/2010 New motorway opens near Budapest A new, 12.4-kilometre stretch of motorway was inaugurated on the eastern outskirts of Budapest on Monday. Motorway M31 connects motorway M3, which runs to the east, with ring road M0 around the capital. The 12.4-kilometre stretch shortens the distance for drivers between eastern Hungary and Budapest's international Ferihegy Airport by 15 kilometres. The ministry not only appreciates the house as the home of Dvorak, but also recognises its urbanistic value, Cieslar said. The Antonin Dvorak Society asked that the run-down house be entered in the list of national cultural heritage properties in order to prevent its further devastation. 23/07/2010 Czechs consider train safest transport means Most Czechs consider the train the safest transport means, followed by the plane and the car, an Internet survey by the Sanep agency has shown. The train is viewed as the safest by one-third of Czechs, plane by 32 percent and car by 9 percent. "Maybe the train has narrowly defeated the plane also because air accidents usually have fatal consequences for all passengers, while in train accidents most passengers have a real chance to survive," Sanep said. 23/07/2010 Czech Defence Ministry looks into dubious order The Czech Defence Ministry started on Friday to look into the case of Kajetan Kalivoda who according to the press stripped the state of millions of crowns through dummy firms, ministry spokesman Jan Pejsek told CTK. He said the investigation of Kalivoda, an official of the Military Housing Stock Administration, was ordered by Defence Minister Alexandr Vondra. Pejsek also said the administration´s former director, Roman Hosta, filed a criminal complaint against Kalivoda on suspicion of abuse of insider information, scheming in public tender and fraud on Thursday. 23/07/2010 Russian plane to check military buildings in Czech Republic A Russian mission will monitor military objects on the territory of the Czech Republic within the Open Skies Treaty next week, Jan Pejsek, from the Defence Ministry press and information service, has told CTK. "Gas from the current contract will run out around October 20," Kaliski said. "We have still not filled in the gap resulting from the RosUkrEnergo contract termination." Gas shortage could affect not only industrial recipients but also households, too, Kaliski said. 23/07/2010 Government to pass four-year financial plan next week Poland's government will adopt the first multi-year financial plan for the coming four years next week. According to economists, the plan will not be binding for future budgets. The plan will comprise planned state revenues and spending, deficit and state budget loan needs, sources of financing them for the coming four years.
