The mining sector is of key importance because it functions as an energy motor for the whole Polish economy, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Wednesday in the southern city of Katowice, a major urban centre in Poland's mining region of Silesia. "Today, six times as many jobs are being created ... in industry, in the broad sense of the word, than in the mining industry, but that doesn't mean that the mining sector isn't the apple of our eye. It's crucial to us because it's the energy motor ... for our entire economy," the prime minister said at a conference that summed up the effects of the government's "Programme for Silesia," a scheme aimed at reforming the industrial region.
