The Republic of Poland is a democratic country situated in Central Europe. The basis of the political system reflects the values like national sovereignty and independence, political pluralism and freedom of activity for political parties, separation of powers, local self-government, inalienable respect for human rights - which underpin the legal system - and freedom of the individual. Lived through over a decade of transformation, Poland contributes its energy and dynamism to a united and tension-free Europe. It supports the European integration process and the vision of a continent of independent citizens and cooperating regions. By joining the NATO in 1999 Poland has joined the campaign to build European, Euro-Atlantic and world security and stability. In May 2004 Poland, together with the other three V4 countries, became a member state of the European Union.
