Since 1989, rising unemployment rates in Slovakia have been a concerning phenomenon, reaching almost 30% in some parts of the country. The state has tried to fight the problem, by empowering individuals and strengthening their “flexibility”, but these policies have not really helped people earn a living. Instead, inhabitants of marginal regions are using a very different notion of flexibility to survive: informal social networks. Needless to say, these people do not need any special train...

While the war is still raging in the East and pundits are busy monitoring the next steps of Putin’s army, Ukrainians are already receiving all sorts of advice about how they should fix their country. The ‘economy’ is of course the magic word, and the top priority. Amidst the loud technical trade-speak, ‘soft’ issues like ‘education’ typically get drowned out. This happened in Slovakia - to its huge detriment.

Gender has become one of the most frequently used words in the Polish public arena. The economy, foreign relations, immigration – nothing raises the temperature of a discussion like “gender.” According to one side of the debate, feminists, women, and LGBT movements are seen as a main threat to the substance of “Polishness.”
