Over the past year, US-Hungary relations had reached the point where those diplomats who shape US foreign policy in Central Europe did not even wish to converse with high-level members of the Fidesz party. Now, however, there are indications that Fidesz is trying to mend this troubled relationship, but their domestic and foreign policy choices will nevertheless continue to constrain Budapest’s ability to significantly improve its ties with Washington.
